The Xiaomi self-developed cell phone SoC chip called “Xuanjie O1”. Enterprise search shows that Beijing Xuanjie technology Co., Ltd. was founded on October 26, 2023, the registered capital of 3 billion yuan, the executive director is Zeng Xuezhong. Xuanjie O1 marks the return of Xiaomi to the field of cell phone main chip design, the strategic importance of the decision is no less than building a car.

That night, Lei Jun spoke to all Xiaomi employees after the Xiaomi values competition. In his speech, Lei Jun announced the imminent release of the self-developed chip, and also talked about the recent public opinion crisis that Xiaomi has encountered and the outlook for the future development of Xiaomi.

An accident has brought great doubts to Xiaomi

Lei Jun first thanked all departments for the wonderful program prepared for the 15th anniversary celebration of Xiaomi, he also mentioned that a traffic accident at the end of March has brought great doubts, criticism and accusations to Xiaomi. “A friend familiar with the automobile industry told me: ‘Build a car and encounter traffic accidents is inevitable.’ But no one expected that the impact of this accident would be so great, and the blow to our Xiaomi would be so great.”

Lei Jun said the accident made Xiaomi realize the public’s high expectations and strict requirements, and also marked that Xiaomi is no longer just a newcomer to the industry, but needs to assume the responsibility of a large company and industry leader.

Attaching great importance to automobile safety and quality: to be the safest car

Lei Jun recalled that when Xiaomi decided to build a car four years ago, he was extraordinarily worried about car safety. Xiaomi has always attached great importance to the quality and safety of cars, and has achieved high scores in various authoritative reviews over the past year since it was listed. However, the accident made them realize that the public’s expectations are far greater than imagined, and that Xiaomi must be an industry leader in automotive safety and even become the safest car, rather than just complying or reaching the industry average.

Xiaomi currently invests about 105 billion in R&D

This year is the 15th anniversary of our Xiaomi venture, which is a big day, and we have prepared a series of celebrations for the 15th anniversary. However, at the end of March, a sudden traffic accident shattered all this. We were subjected to a storm of questions, criticisms and accusations, and I was as dumbfounded as my colleagues.

A friend familiar with the automobile industry told me, “When you build a car, it’s inevitable that you will encounter a traffic accident.” But no one expected that the impact of this accident would be so great, and the blow to our Xiaomi would be so great.

Thinking back to four years ago, when we decided to build a car, I have been particularly worried about the safety issue, so we are immensely concerned about the quality and safety of the car. After three or four years of hard work by so many colleagues in the automotive team, our SU7 has been on the market for more than a year, and I think the quality has always been something we are proud of, and we have received the highest scores in all the authoritative organizations we have participated in the evaluation. However, I never expected that this traffic accident would make us realize that the public’s expectations and demands on us far exceeded our imagination.

In fact, at this moment I really realize that we have always felt that we are new to the automotive industry and we are a start-up company. But this incident makes me deeply understand that Xiaomi’s scale, influence and social attention have reached a very high place today, and society and the public require us to assume the responsibility of a truly large company industry leader. We deeply realize that this is my 15 years of Xiaomi’s inescapable responsibility.

So today I want to share with you is that the 15-year-old Xiaomi, no longer a newcomer to the industry, we are no longer in any industry novice protection period, we have to have higher standards and goals.

So, when it comes to automobile safety. What I want to tell you is that we want to be the safest car in its class in the field of automobile safety. We want to be more than just compliant and more than just an industry leader, we want to be a leader in the automotive industry and make (beyond) industry level safety.

On April 1 of this year, I said to the public in the Weibo, Xiaomi will never avoid any problems. Never avoid, that is, we are required to face the problem, face themselves, correct mistakes, continuous improvement. To do this, I know that it is very, very difficult, which requires each of us to attach great importance to, need our entire team to work together, unity, and joint efforts.

Over the past month or so, I have had countless meetings with the management of the Group and the students of the Automotive Department. In fact, the main theme of the meetings was only one – how do we systematically go about solving the problem? How do we come up with more convincing operational and governance performance to respond to the public’s higher demands on us?

This year is Xiaomi’s 15th anniversary, and we had planned many, many celebrations, summaries, and planning activities, but most of them were canceled. In any case, taking this opportunity, I think we still need to seriously summarize the gains and losses of the past five years.

I personally believe that the most important thing about Xiaomi in the past 5 years is that we have always insisted on the technology-based. 5 years ago, we put forward a brand new goal — committed to become the global leader of the new generation of hardcore technology. 5 years ago, we clearly committed to five years of R & D investment of more than 100 billion yuan, to increase the research and development of the core technology, and by now, we have invested approximately $10 billion. Five years ago, we made a clear commitment to invest more than 100 billion dollars in R&D over five years, and to increase the R&D of core technologies, and we have invested about 105 billion dollars so far.

Today here, I want to share with you an incredibly important news: our self-developed cell phone SoC chip Xuanjie O1, is expected to be released at the end of the month.

This is the outcome of the 10-year milestone of our Xiaomi core-making, and a new starting point for Xiaomi’s breakthrough in hard-core technology. Chip making is the public and Mi fan friends’ ardent expectation of us, and it is the necessary path for Xiaomi to move towards the hard core technology leader, and we Xiaomi will go forward.

In 2019, it was a very difficult time for us, when we faced various problems both internally and externally. It was at the supplier conference at the end of that year that I said this to our industrial chain partners: “The fast wind knows the grass, and the road knows the horse power. “I believe that by today, all partners may clearly see that today’s Xiaomi is much stronger than five years ago. Until today, we Xiaomi has been founded for 15 years. All these years of ups and downs, wind and rain, we have proved our resilience.

I remember when I started, I thought it would take 15 years for people to really understand and recognize Xiaomi, and today it seems that we are still too optimistic, 15 years is not enough. But it doesn’t matter, we’ll just keep going until the day we’re fully proven.

Today’s Xiaomi is far from being the strongest, but I believe that in terms of perseverance, resilience, defiance, and not being able to be defeated, no one has more perseverance and patience than we do.
