Lei Jun’s School days
In 1976, Lei Jun, who was about 7 years old, attended Zhaowan Elementary School in Zhaowan Village.
The villagers recalled that Lei Jun loved to study very much when he was a child, and he read books during meals, and he even studied at home instead of going to watch movies in the village. To be honest, in the 1970s and 1980s, the rural areas can show movies, or quite rare, unlike nowadays TV and cell phones are so common, you can watch movies at any time, Lei Jun at a young age know how to restrain the desire to concentrate on learning, really know how to do.
In addition, there are reports that Lei Jun as a child in the countryside with dry batteries and light bulbs invented a lamp, used to give his mother night cooking lighting.
In 1978, at the age of 9, Lei Jun was transferred to the Construction Street Elementary School in Xiantao City, although his mother and two sisters remained in the countryside for the time being.
In 1981, at the age of 11, Lei Jun graduated from elementary school and entered the junior high school attached to the Hubei Mianyang Teachers’ Training School with the 2nd best score in the whole school.
Around 1982, Lei Jun’s mother left her home in Zhaowan Village with his two sisters and moved to downtown Xiantao for a family reunion.
Lei Jun’s parents sold their old house in Zhaowan Village to a villager from the same village. The house was then torn down by this villager in preparation for building a new mansion of his own, but in the end it was not built, and so Lei Jun’s old mansion is currently just a field.

In 1984, at the age of 14, Lei Jun entered Mianyang Middle School, which is now Xiantao Middle School, with the 3rd best score in the whole school. During his high school years, Lei Jun did very well in science. Moreover, Lei Jun also liked to play Go and had won the school Go competition.
In July 1987, at the age of 17, Lei Jun took the college entrance examination and finally entered the computer department of Wuhan University with 588 points. Lei Jun once said that his sophomore classmate got into Peking University and his junior classmate got into Tsinghua University.

It is said that Lei Jun wanted to major in chemistry, but since his good friend entered the computer science program of China University of Science and Technology, Lei Jun gave up the chemistry major and chose the computer science program in order to have more in common with his best friend.
It was also in this year that Lei Jun entered Wuhan University, where he happened to see a book called The Fire of Silicone Valley in the library, which introduced entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley, including the entrepreneurial journey of Apple founder Steve Jobs.

Lei Jun said that the book, which was published in 1985, was priced at only 2 dollars and 14 cents, but after he finished reading it, it changed his life, and since then he has had a goal:“I was born to be useful! I must do something amazing in the future. Be a great man.”
In 1989, at the age of 19, Lei Jun, in his sophomore year of college, had already finished the credits to be taken in four years of college in advance. To his own after two years of tossing entrepreneurship, leaving enough time.
During his college years, Lei Jun also frequented Guangbutun, an electronics street in Wuhan, where he worked part-time to help people watch the store, install systems, repair computers, and learn programming with the prototypes on display in his spare time. Here he met Wang Quanguo, who was already teaching in the computer department of Wuhan University of Surveying and Mapping Technology.
On August 17, 1989, during the summer vacation, Lei Jun and Wang Quanguo wrote the encryption software BTILOK together, and the first money Lei Jun got on this software was 50 yuan overtime pay.
But since then 7 years, Lei Jun and Wang Quanguo has been maintained and updated the software, the version from 0.99 to 3.0, during which Lei Jun has also been alone to complete the 1.0 version of the rewrite, the software was also obtained after Kingsoft, UFIDA and other well-known companies to buy, cumulative Lei Jun and Wang Quanguo and others earned more than 1 million yuan, Lei Jun said that the development of the BTILOK so that he made his life’s first bucket of gold, but this is all an afterthought. But this is all an afterthought.

In 1989, when computer viruses had just appeared, Lei Jun and his college friend Feng Zhihong wrote their second commercial software, Immunity 90, a virus-immunization software that helped protect computers from Internet viruses. This work eventually won the first prize for scientific and technological achievements of university students in Hubei province.
That year, “Immunity 90” was sold to the public for 260 yuan a set, and sold dozens of sets in Wuhan, allowing them to earn a few thousand dollars.
A few thousand dollars around 1990 is not a small amount of money, compare: when Liu Qiangdong entered the People’s University in 1992, the whole village only gave him a total of 76 eggs and 500 yuan living expenses.
In the summer of 1990, the 20-year-old Lei Jun, together with Wang Guoqun and four others, founded Three Colors, a company known as the Wuhan Institute of Modern E-learning Technology, Three Colors Computer Department, which was named Three Colors because they believed that the colorful world evolved from the three colors red, yellow and blue.
At that time, Lei Jun had the first business card in his life, and his position in the company was senior programmer and technical director.

However, only six months later, the three colors of the company because of business instability, unable to make a profit, everyone’s equity parity led to the management of the power is not unified, internal strife, and ultimately the company was broken up, the four people branch assets, Lei Jun and Wang Guoqun were divided into a 286 computer and a printer.
Lei Jun’s first business failure, his summary is: run the company is too difficult, light technology is not enough, there are too many things to learn.

In 1991, 21-year-old Lei Jun ushered in the graduation season of Wuhan University, the university graduates at that time the state to allocate jobs, so he was eventually assigned to a military research institute under the Ministry of Aerospace in Beijing, with a guaranteed job that many people envy.
But Lei Jun has always had an idea to participate in large projects, but at that time, the hero had no use for it.
